addressing mistakes and old habits
...with the previous post in mind, and putting it in a knitterly context, I have determined to learn to knit 'properly'. I am, for my sins, a dyedinthewool thrower. This is because I was an impatient child who thought she knew best when first being taught to knit. But now, having thoroughly examined other techniques, I think it is time to knuckle down. So far, I am finding the continental method marginally less weird and ham fisted to execute than the proper english throwing method (my throwing to date involves actually dropping the right hand needle entirely, although I don't do that but hang on to the tip with my left thumb and forefinger, resting the tail end of the needle in my lap). I think I am liking the continental method better as it also seems a bit more flexible - though I never noticed my Mother ever having trouble knitting anything with her English way - holding the right hand needle like a pen and throwing with her right forefinger - but that feels so odd to me, and my hands seem to be entirely the wrong shape to loop the yarn with that right finger. Still, I shall attempt to master both. In my quest to learn I did stumble across a little video on Youtube of a Portuguese method involving hooked needles and throwing the yarn with the left thumb from the front of the work. The quest continues.
