View from the top of the Q

The Q1 is, you may remember, part of that crazy urban view from Nelson's balcony.

It is also claimed to be the tallest residential building in the world at 320 m. But it only takes 45 seconds or so to go up 77 floors, or 230 m, in the lift to the enclosed SkyPoint Observation deck. It makes your ears pop. You can even climb up on the outside to the base of the 'needle' if you really want. We didn't want.

But the view. On a good day you can see for 60 km in every direction. But of course I am much more interested in showing you where we...OK, OK..where Nelson lives. This is looking South.

It's pretty ace as views go. And it makes all that urban build-up seem not nearly so bad. All the high rise stuff is mainly along the coast. The rest of the city is an extraordinary complex of waterways and low level development, with more canals and water than Venice!

And this is looking north, toward Stradbroke and Fraser and Moreton Islands.

For such a large city - population about 500,000 - it's pretty nice. It may not look it from these pictures but it feels incredibly spacious when you're in it, and it is a very clean, well tended city. It somehow doesn't feel much like a city.

And when the sun goes down...Surfer's Paradise gets all dressed up.

Quite a sight.
